Cosmetic Surgery Abroad – NHS Picking Up the Pieces
Many are turning to cosmetic surgery abroad in order to save money on procedures such as breast augmentation surgery and lap band, but is there a hidden extra cost pay?
It seems that the NHS is having to spend millions of pounds of fixing botched plastic surgery performed on patients abroad. Each year, thousands of people travel to destinations of Eastern Europe and Africa in the context of cosmetics vacation packages surgery.
In a survey conducted by BAPR (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons) it was revealed that a quarter of its members had treated patients to correct a series of complications related to surgical procedures performed abroad.
Worryingly, of complications from poorly conducted operations breast augmentation which has left patients with asymmetrical breasts, patients end up with pads inside the sites. In severe cases of a number of patients with blood poisoning, blood clots and wound infections.
People can expect the NHS to pick up the pieces and as there is no clear policy regarding whether or not they should provide treatment to these patients, although the choice of going abroad for price reduction and high risk surgery was theirs.
Some argue that these patients should be made to pay for surgery remedy as it is originally an unnecessary drain on NHS resources at a time when obesity and smoking-related diseases are increasing fast. If the problems of life are threatened, so of course any professional in this field would agree that treatment should be given without hesitation.
In light of these considerations, the moral of the story, it seems to be very careful before making any decision to travel abroad for procedures of this nature. When it comes to cosmetic surgery it seems that the old adage is true – you really get what you pay for.
